The bottom line The one to buy if the job is large: it is the flow rate, not the bar figure, that separates it from the model below.
The K 5 FJ is the point in Kärcher’s domestic range where the machine changes character. 145 bar and 500 l/h, a stated 40 m²/h, big wheels and a fixed handle — it is built to be pulled along a drive rather than carried to a bike.
Between the K 4 and the K 5 there are fifteen bar and eighty litres an hour. The bar figure is marketing; the eighty litres is time. Flow is what removes what the pressure has loosened, so on any surface large enough to measure in tens of square metres, the K 5 finishes proportionally sooner. On a car or a set of garden chairs, neither machine is the limiting factor — your patience with the lance is.
This is the plain FJ version, not a Home bundle: you get the Vario Power adjustable lance, the dirt blaster, the Foam Jet nozzle and a bottle of 3-in-1 car shampoo. You do not get a surface cleaner, and the 40 m²/h figure quietly assumes one. Buying the machine without a surface head, then cleaning a terrace with the lance, is the most common way to be disappointed by an entirely capable machine.
The accessory holders on the body sound like a detail and are not. Lances left on wet ground pick up grit, which goes through the nozzle at 145 bar and wears it oval; a worn nozzle drops pressure and widens the pattern, and the machine feels tired for reasons nobody connects to a lance left in the mud. Fixed holders are the cheapest maintenance on the machine.
Whatever the model, water left in the pump over winter is what kills it. Disconnect the supply, pull the trigger until it stops spitting, and store it somewhere that does not freeze. A cracked pump housing is a repair worth more than the machine.

Compare the flow figures rather than the pressures: 420 l/h against 500 l/h, for 15 bar of difference. On a small courtyard the K 4 finishes the job. On a long drive the extra fifth of water is roughly a fifth off the time, every time you use it — and the K 5's wheels and fixed handle matter as soon as the machine has to follow you more than a few metres.
It matters more than the fifteen bar. Without a surface head you clean with the lance, which is slower, striped and splashes the wall behind you. If you buy this version, budget for a T 5 or T 7 head at the same time — and check the fitting, because Kärcher's bayonet is not the same as anyone else's.
It spins a single pencil jet in a tight circle, which concentrates the whole of the machine's output into a small area. On concrete, drains and heavy lichen it does in one pass what a fan jet does in six. On decking, render, paint and anything soft it cuts a visible line if you pause — it is a tool for hard surfaces only.
